Do brake disc rotors need to retain the deep large phillips screws fastening them to the wheel hub?

I'm trying to change the rear disc rotors on my Honda Prelude and I can remove the caliper OK, but each rear rotor has two very large phillips screws on the surface facing outward, and I can't get them off.

My friend said it's OK to strip
