I have been experiencing some problems with my 1997 BMW 540. My hazard lights stay on and won't shut off. Help?

My hazard lights stay on constantly and don't shut off. Can anyone suggest what I can do about it myself?
I was working on a friends car with exactly the same problem.
More then likely it will be the clicker unit in the switch, i was reading about them on some BMW forums and they are supposed to be complete rubbish.
